AHA’s stand for Alpha Hydroxy Acids, whereas BHA’s stand for Beta Hydroxy Acids, but what is the difference? The acids have gained popularity for their anti-ageing and acne fighting benefits within skincare products, and they are both primarily used within exfoliators. Both contain different ingredients and are therefore suitable for different skincare types and needs:
AHA's
Ingredients: Can be identified by their ingredients such as: glycolic acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid, malic, and citric acid.
Products: You may find AHA’s in a wide variety of products due to their ability to promote skin cell turnover and rejuvenate the skin: Lift Off Exfoliating Cleanser, Lift Off Purifying Cleanser, Space Anti Age Night Renewal Cream
How do they work? AHA’s work by dissolving the dead skin cells so that they can be sloughed away and removed easily from the skin’s surface. They work well to moisturise the skin as they possess the ability to help the skin retain moisture. AHA’s have immense anti-ageing benefits as they are able to rejuvenate the skin.
Who are they suitable for? Anyone with sun-damage skin, dry skin
Not suitable for: Those who suffer from breakouts
BHA's
Ingredients: Salicylic acid
Products: Toners, cleansers, exfoliators: Ground Control Anti Blemish Tonic
How does it work? BHA’s possess an anti-inflammatory effect and work the same way that AHA’s do –by dissolving dead skin cells. However, the primary difference is between the solution’s textures. BHA’s are oil soluble and are therefore more suited to different skincare types.
Who are they suited for? BHA’s are great for anyone who suffers from breakouts and has oily skin as they are able to remove excess oil, dead skin cells and sebum from the skin. With an anti-bacterial effect, BHA’s can prevent breakouts from forming. BHA’s also have an anti-inflammatory effect and so those who have sensitive skin or suffer from skin conditions will benefit from the use of BHA’s
