Optimising Your Serums
Optimising Your Serums

The amount of different skincare products and categories available in the market can feel overwhelming. When it comes to building your optimal skincare regime, newbies often find the task intimidating and devoted skincare fans may have experimented awhile to perfect it. From cleansing first thing in the morning to layering the perfect overnight cream, it takes some time to learn how each product acts on our skin. After all, what is the difference between serums, boosters and moisturisers? How many different types are there? How should we layer them? From ageing to acne, every skin concern can benefit from a serum.
THE FOUNDATION FOR SERUMS
Ziad Halub, Head of Education at 111SKIN, says: “if you are starting to build your own high-tech skincare arsenal, first invest in a very good serum”. So what exactly are they, and why should we really invest in a good one? Think of a thin, liquid or gel like facial product jam-packed with an extremely concentrated formula engineered for targeted skin concerns. For those suffering from specific issues such as lack of collagen, uneven texture, acne and fine lines; it is a very important product. Actually, quite essential if you wish to effectively tackle these issues. In terms of skincare products, nothing is as potent as serums. Its smaller molecules can deeply penetrate into the skin, making it possible for the active ingredients to work their magic like no other product.
ARE SERUMS MANIPULATED AND APPLIED IN SIMILAR WAYS?
There are two categories of serums: water-based and oil-based. Water-based intensively nourishes the inner layer of the skin due to its tiny molecule size, whilst the oil-based ones can go on top of your chosen moisturiser due to its bigger molecules.
A water base is definitely friendlier to oily and combination skin types, whilst oil-based really benefits dry skin. Both are really effective when it comes to locking up the moisture of whatever goes underneath.
All serums, however, are made for daily application. As some formulas can definitely sensitise skin, it's recommended to follow-up with a proper sunscreen. Before applying any product, make sure to read the label and follow through the instructions after test-patching accordingly.
WHEN SHOULD I START INVESTING IN SERUMS?
From around 25 years old our skin starts demonstrating a bit more of its ageing process – by that time, a more elaborate skincare routine may already have been started and this would be a good time to invest in a high quality serum to introduce into it.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MOISTURISERS, BOOSTERS AND SERUMS?
Moisturisers also contain powerful hydration properties – however, they don’t work from the inside out. Their effect tends to concentrate on the outer layers of your skin where they can sit and hold moisture in, which makes them totally different from serums. A serum is designed to go deeper inside the skin layers to have its targeted benefit.
Boosters are almost like a treatment serum, however they are meant to be incorporated into your current skincare routine and added into another product like a moisturiser instead of being the foundation of it all. You should use as and when you need them, not necessarily include them as a mandatory daily step.
