On Making Peace With Your Skin.

On Making Peace With Your Skin.

We live in an era where self-image comprises a lot of digital exposure. With the advent of numerous social media platforms, we constantly point the camera towards ourselves – it is a kind of self-judgement, but with an unrestricted audience attached. Nowadays, being very confident when it comes to skin became an even bigger challenge. Have you ever tried going #nomakeup not only on Instagram, but actually in real life? Are you a big fan of blurring your skin before posting any snaps?

Not too long ago, in January, British photographer Rankin published an interesting experiment on his Instagram page. Named "Selfie Harm", it started with some teenagers snapshots taken by him. The raw, unedited material was then handed to them so they could edit "until they felt the image was ‘social media ready’", as he wrote. The result? Every single person did some post-production editing on their photos. It doesn't mean that this is a wrong practice in any way, but it does prove that in this day and age we are quite addicted to altering our own image in order to fit into a social media aesthetic we brainstormed altogether.

For my latest series, Selfie Harm 🤳 I photographed teenagers & handed them the image to then edit & filter until they felt the image was ‘social media ready’. People are mimicking their idols, making their eyes bigger, their nose smaller and their skin brighter, and all for social media likes. It’s just another reason why we are living in a world of FOMO, sadness, increased anxiety, and Snapchat dysmorphia. It’s time to acknowledge the damaging effects that social media has on people’s self-image. Thanks to: the incredible individuals that took part in the @Visual.Diet project; Jennifer, Felix, Alessandra, Maisie, Isaac, Seb, Beneditcte, Shereen, Mahalia, Eve, Siena, Tomas, Emma & Georgia. In the middle of all that digital pressure we find it hard to ignore, skincare rituals became not only a trend amongst millennials, but also acts of self-love. Investing in good products and treatments prove to be quite helpful if you suffer from severe skin conditions – that is what patients of Dr. Yannis Alexandrides, founder of 111SKIN and renowned Cosmetic Surgeon, demonstrated. The brand, created a
long his wife Eva, started to cater for their ever-growing demand outside the clinic walls. What once was a patient protocol truly became a life mission, currently reaching 5 different continents.

“I've had been struggling with my aging, tired skin. On a friend’s recommendation, I invested in this set. After a month’s use my skin is brighter, smoother and the fine lines I've had for years are all but gone! Will definitely repurchase”

CELESTIAL BLACK DIAMOND SET

“For 5 years I have suffered with the worst rosacea. M y skin not only looked absolutely horrific, but the pain was agonising – I spent 3 years back and forth at doctors and hospitals with absolutely no results apart from a cream which not only burned my skin, but made it 10 times worse. I had never ever felt so low in my life. No exaggeration. After a lot of self-research, I found this product. Within 3 weeks, my life changed again. My skin started to clear, no more agonising red lumps, itching or burning. Six months in, my skin is continuing to improve. Using it just once a day, one pump, it lasts months. Trust me, I spent about 1000 on various lotions, potions, heartache and make-up to try before this miracle product. Life changing for me, I can face the world now. Thank you 111SKIN”

“I use masks a lot whether they are the wash off, peel off, or sheet/gel masks so I know the difference in qualities of each one. These are top quality, they feel wonderful while on and if you are like me you won't want to remove it. I have always heard that masks should make your skin glow after use, I had never seen mine like this until this mask and it was great! I used some of the serum from the mask on this dry spot on my thigh that will not go away, no matter what I put on it. It is now healing. Wonderful Mask!”
