What IS NIACINAMIDE?

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is an essential nutrient that our bodies naturally produce. It can also be found in a lot of food we eat, such as green vegetables, fish, eggs, and beans and is required to maintain healthy cells.

When applied topically, Niacinamide has incredible benefits for all ages and skin types. As an antioxidant, Niacinamide works to reduce hyperpigmentation fights signs of ageing and targets blemishes and congestion.

Why do we need it?

With powerful anti-inflammatory properties, Niacinamide is a key ingredient in combatting acne and rosacea, while also minimising the appearance of enlarged pores, hydrating, protecting and improving discolouration. By slowing down the amount of excess sebum that the skin produces, Niacinamide is very effective. In the winter, we are impacted by the harsh environmental factors from every direction that can damage our skin’s natural barrier. Niacinamide plays an important role in maintaining a healthy skin barrier as it can increase the production of Ceramides and keratin that our skin produces.

HOW TO MAKE IT EFFECTIVE?

The trick to making Niacinamide effective is finding the correct formula for your skin type. Niacinamide can come in a range of potencies, but to see results anywhere between 2% and 10% is a good place to start.

As an antioxidant, Niacinamide plays nicely with most ingredients. There are mixed results shown, however, about the use of Niacinamide and Vitamin C as some say it may cause red flushing of the skin. If you have sensitive skin and want to use both products, applying Niacinamide in the morning and Vitamin C in the evening.

WHEN starting out

Niacinamide is an active ingredient and can often cause purging, which is an increased cell turnover, and sometimes mild irritation. As there are so many products on the market with varying strengths, it’s always recommended to patch test to find out where it can be best incorporated into your routine.

WHEN APPLYING ...

As a water-soluble vitamin, Niacinamide is typically found in water-based serums or toners. Niacinamide will be most effective if used right after cleansing and before heavier products and used twice a day. With any skin-saver product, finish off your routine with a healthy amount of SPF30 to protect from environmental factors you encounter during the day.
