Beauty Secrets straight FROM THE ARTIST.

From creating Meghan Markle’s iconic bridal look to obtaining a Brand Ambassadorship for Dior Beauty and Colour Consultant for Honest Beauty, Daniel Martin is a force within the industry. Working with the likes of Pat McGrath as well as collaborating with designers including Proenza Schouler and Khaite, Daniel is creating a space as to which beauty can transcend the traditional space it has circulated for so long. Discussing the future of the industry, what to look forward to in 2020 and sharing his personal grooming routine, we examine where makeup artistry is today.

How did you discover make-up artistry as a career?

Well whilst I was in college, I worked with MAC Cosmetics and then eventually started working with Nordstrom. It wasn’t until I moved to the East Coast in the early 90s that I realised I could have a full-time career as a make-up artist.

What made you fall in love with it?

I would have to say that it all started with my grandmother, I never saw her leave the house without her face being made-up and wearing a bold lip. From a young age, make-up was a very normal thing for me to be around.

What was your first project?

That is definitely a hard one to answer, but the most significant project that sticks out to me was when I created a lipstick with Lancôme in 2009. I had a background in education and formulation around cosmetics when I worked with the marketing department for Aveda and from that experience, I was then able to create my very own shade.

Who influenced your journey as an artist?

First off, Pat McGrath was a huge influence in the early years of my career as I worked with her whilst at Aveda. From that I would say fashion books was a huge source of inspiration, there was no Instagram at the time to find the look you wanted to create and so books allowed you to execute your own vision and find your own place.

How would you define your style of working?

I like to focus on one’s best feature and from that I like to accentuate it. I want my clients to feel and look confident and to own their beauty. I think it’s important to use make-up for accentuation rather than a cover up. I would also say that colour is a great accessory, whether over the eyes, on the lips or on the cheeks, it offers such a brightness to the complexion that is undeniably beautiful.

Speaking of clients, what does an average day look like to you?

Every day is so different but generally I would wake up around 6:30/7am and check through emails and then ensure my kit is ready for the day. At the moment I am in between celebrities, red carpets and award season and constantly flying.

Does it ever get tiring?

It does and my only time off for an extended length of time was in December for 2 weeks straight and other than that, I am flying all over the world. Sometimes I wish I could have a 9-5 but then I genuinely couldn’t say that I would love what I do. I love the adventure and the fact that I am my own boss and I am grateful for that every day.

What is your morning/evening grooming routine?

So, I have sensitive skin and suffer with Eczema so where many people can experiment with skincare products, I cannot. In the morning I would wash my face with a cleansing oil, apply a 111SKIN Facial Treatment Mask before finishing off with the 111SKIN Space Defence Bright Eye Lift Gel – I swear by it. At night I tend to not do too much apart from cleansing my skin but one thing I am diligent about is SPF and using water-based products.

Why water-based?

Well I find that no other product can work as well under make-up, it is great for longevity and I think 111SKIN works so well under make-up and I can’t say that about a lot of brands.

Do you have any wellness habits or fitness routines?

I try to do Pilates 1-2 times a week and I also attend Rolfing treatment sessions. It is a cross between intense yoga and massages and works to re-align the muscles throughout your body. It is painful and some sessions are harder than others but it’s refreshing and re-energising once the full effects take over.

Aside from your routines, how would you wind down in the evening?

If I’m not playing with my cat, it would be implementing CBD into my routine to help me unwind and relax in the evening. I don’t drink and so I see this as my little glass of red wine at the end of the night.

Do you have any on-the-go/ travel essentials?

I absolutely pull a Naomi Campbell on every flight that I go on, I disinfect everything, from seat to tray. My publicist gifted me a cashmere blanket and eye mask which I carry on every flight and I have curated a travel bag with Cuyana which I always travel with.

Do you have an in-flight routine?

My skin gets super dry on flights and so I like to drink as much water as possible rather than apply a sheet mask. I am super aware of people around me and don’t fancy pulling out my in-flight routine in front of them – low key is what I am when I fly.

Steering back to the industry, what do you think it takes to succeed in the industry today?

Definitely patience, kindness and to remember where you came from. You often forget that the industry is very small and for that, word can get around very quickly. It is also important from a business and brand point of view not to make social media, especially Instagram, your only vice. Use it as a marketing strategy but not your only source of branding.

What trends in 2020 are you a fan of and looking forward to showcasing on clients?

I love the experimentation around colour, and I feel as though 2020 is the time that beauty takes on a whole new level and it’s an opportunity of optimism. Less questions are being asked and there is more acceptance around topics that at one point in time was harder to discuss i.e. men wearing make-up in the industry and plastic surgery.

Known as the master behind Meghan Markle’s wedding day make-up, what would be the three areas to focus on in order to replicate the look?

I would say bronzer, a peachy-pink lipstick and mascara, Meghan loves a lash.

Finally, before the quick-fire round, what is your make-up kit essentials?

I have a stack of 111SKIN masks and the Space Defence Bright Eye Lift Gel and then I love working with Nars Cosmetic eye shadow palettes, Tatcha blotting papers, Ardell lashes and the new Dior Forever Skin Correct that is a 2-in-1 for a foundation and concealer. In general, I love Dior, Honest Beauty, Nyx Cosmetics, Nars and Cinema Secrets.

Favourite timeless looks to create?

Anything with a bold lip and is paired so beautifully when it comes to hair you can go from a wave that re-creates a 40s or straight hair that then re-creates an iconic look from the 90s.

Favourite 111SKIN product?

The intensive range is so powerful yet effective and the masks are super chic.

Number 1 rule for skin?

Always wash your face, you will be surprised at how many people still don’t do this regularly.

Number 1 rule for make-up application?

Always work with clean brushes, the build-up of bacteria is astounding.

Oh, that’s hard as they create different effects however I would a brush because you can apply way too much with a blender.
