A Masterclass With Deanna Hagan
By Deanna Hagan
I wanted to focus on the skincare steps I take both personally and professionally.
The importance of cleansing the skin should not be overlooked. I've been especially attentive to that step during the lockdown as it's easy to become lax in following any sort of routine. But cleansing the skin is essential for allowing proper penetration of the following steps. And choosing the right cleanser will ensure its effectiveness. Next step is the Essence, I can't say enough of the importance of the essence to my personal skincare routine and to the routine I use when doing make-up on models. The lightness of its texture allows for easy absorbency and with the seaweed, Aloe Vera and NAC Y2 (link) complex it refreshes the senses as well as the skin. I put a few drops in my hands and gently rub them together, warming up the product before pressing into the skin. I love to take slow deep breaths while pressing the product in as the aromatic benefits shouldn't be overlooked. I notice that a lot of girls do the same when I’m applying it to them as well.
I love to double mask, layering an eye mask (either the de-puffing or the black diamond) underneath a face mask. My preferred face mask is the newly reformulated Bio-Cellulose, which now contains the NAC Y2 complex as well. Doing a gentle massage of the skin after each step is a luxury that I take the time to do on models when and on myself as often as possible. Massaging works to stimulate the skin (be gentle) and also helps one assess what or how much the skin needs in order to be in its best form: supple with bounce and glow. I always say, "skin first". If we focus on the skin first, make-up then becomes much more about enhancing one's features, creating a character and allowing your beauty to radiate.
I'm faithful to applying serums, the original 111SKIN product, Y Theorem Repair Serum. It's concentrated and highly absorbent, boosting collagen (the strength and firmness for your skin) and improves the skin elasticity. The effects of this serum are visible almost immediately. (Bye bye fine lines and wrinkles) I let the skin rest with the serum while I visit the eyes, applying the Bright Eye Lift Gel. As always, I first apply the product (for this 1 pump) to the top of my hand which serves as a palette. Then I go with my fingertip to the undereye area first, gently pressing the gel in, I move from the inside corner to the outer and back again. I also like to use both hands and do both eyes simultaneously. This gentle pressing also helps relieve the lymphatic system. You can do this step also while wearing eye masks. Following the eyes, I apply the Meso Infusion Lip Duo. This pen provides a quick plumping and filling of line lines on and around the lips. I love the velvety texture of Step 1 and the nourishment in Step 2. This provide a great base for adding lip colour, especially bold tones. Although sometimes it’s all that’s needed, and I go with the natural look. My final skincare step is the moisturizer. My go to is the Nocturnal Eclipse Recovery Cream. I tend to go without foundation so there’s zero conflict using a richer moisturizer. I’m also typically light-handed when applying foundation on models too so this cream is still my go-to.
I keep either the Y Theorem Day Cream Light or the Black Diamond Emulsion on hand for when I need to do a stronger base and work with powder or when creating matte skin looks. Men also love the lightness in the Black Diamond Emulsion! If you want to add in some extra treatments, I seasonally will do a few weeks of the Black Diamond Retinol Oil to treat any pigmentation and enlarged pores while preparing the skin to receive hydration benefits of an intensified routine. In my transition from winter skin into spring/summer, I’ve been using the Celestial Black Diamond Multi-Acid Accelerated Peel. While in a bath, the steam opens the pores and I let the peel sit on the skin for about 10 minutes and the gently massage it away with the rose quartz crystal particles. I find my skin is more illuminated and receptive to my moisturizer.
For make-up, after weeks of the lockdown, I began to fantasize about going back to places I'd been or places I've yet to go to. So, I revisited one of my favourite movies, Le Mépris (Contempt). It's a Brigette Bardot movie from the late 60's with an incredible colour palette, tragic soundtrack, summertime in Capri and of course Bardot's make-up: thick feline shaped eyeliner, peach blushed cheeks and sheer warm orange toned lips. I used Surratt Beauty products. Starting with a little concealer under eye to help lighten and awaken the eyes. Then I used the Dew Drops foundation, which melds beautifully into the skin without disturbing the supple texture already there from my skincare routine. I definitely don’t want to cover that up! But foundation can help blend away discoloration and minimize spots. I use 2 colours as one just doesn’t deliver a natural look with dimension. 1 colour makes the surface too flat. Focus the lighter colour around the corners of the nose, mouth, on the chin, between the brows. I like to use the back of my hand as a palette to blend and to lift the product using my fingers and pressing into the skin.
Once the skin is done, I went to the eyes, give a quick grooming to the brows and fill as you like. My preference is for a subtle brow with a wide arch, especially when doing a more powerful eyeliner. The feline flick is a fun liner to work on and personalize as we all have different eye shapes, skill levels and personal styles. For those new to a liquid liner, the Surratt Auto-Graphique liner is pretty easy to manage. Using your pinkie finger to stabilize, go with the brush at an angle horizontally, pressing into the lash line (you should feel this in the lashes) and then move outward angling the brush up. If drawing the outline of the shape works best for you, you can fill it after you’re happy with the shape. No rules here, just fun!

Curl your lashes with the best eyelash curler out there (Surratt). Add a couple of coats of mascara concentrating on lifting the lashes outward in the shape of your eyeliner. If you want to deepen this look, I dotted a little liner in my bottom lashes and gently smudged it with my fingers and then hit with a nice coat of mascara on my bottom lashes. Voilà! Feline eyes.
I brushed a warm peachy blush high on the apples of my cheeks and a swipe across my forehead and down the centre of the nose. This gives the illusion of warmth and brightness exactly where the sun would hit. Add a sheer warm orange hue to the lips, I like the look of a stained lip and so used the Lip Crayon in Clementine. You could opt for a stronger finish by applying directly to the lip for rich velvety colour or press in a little at a time until you’ve achieved that perfectly stained pout.
I love this classic look with the modern twist of radiant and glowing skin (the 60’s was too matte). Remember “skin first” and follow with makeup for fun, to enhance a feature, and to showcase your natural beauty.
