Do I Need A Separate Eye Care Product?

Eye creams are one of those products which most people are not sure whether they actually need or not. Facial moisturisers and eye creams do have some similarities and in some cases may even have the same ingredients, but there are differences to be aware off. You should also be aware of differences in the skin you’re caring for.

Firstly the skin around your eyes is thinner and more sensitive than the rest of your body. Eye creams are moisturisers which are specifically designed for this delicate skin and are often formulated with ingredients that will tackle common problems like fine lines, puffiness and dark circles. If you want to tackle these problems head on, and find your current facial moisturiser too irritating for this area, then an eye cream is the way to go.

Eye creams are also usually thinner and lighter than most facial moisturisers which is ideal for this sensitive area. They’re easier to apply and the thinner consistency means your foundation and concealer is less likely to crease and sink into fine lines. The majority of eyes creams are also created without perfumes and fragrances, which are common irritants. Many products contain Arbutin, a brightening agent to improve the look of dark circles, and Caffeine, to reduce puffiness.

Before using a new eye cream you should apply a little on a test spot for a few days, then watch out for tearing, redness or rashes that some products may cause. Once you’ve establishing the eye cream is suitable for you, apply twice a day to the orbital area using your ring finger. Don’t apply too close to the lash line as your lashes may pick up the product and irritate your eyes.

It’s important that you still continue to use SPF around the eyes as this is a common area for skin cancer. If your current facial moisturiser contains SPF and you have been using under your eyes with no complaints or irritation then it’s probably fine to carry on using that instead of an eye cream. However if you want a concentrated, specialised product then opt for an eye cream.
