What Is Aloe Barbadensis?

With so many beauty products out there, with all different types of ingredients it can sometimes be difficult to work which ingredient does what, and whether it will be beneficial for your skin. Aloe Barbadensis is an ingredient which you might see listed on some skincare products, but due to it's scientific-sounding name you might unsure of why it's actually included.

What is Aloe Barbaensis?

Aloe Barbadensis is more commonly know an Aloe Vera. Aloe is an ancient plant, first discovered in Eygptian culture and later used for medicinal purposes in China, India, Pakistan and Europe. The plant has thick, succulent leaves, green-grayish in colour, with spiny ridges. Inside the leaf there is a sweet, cool gel which can be extracted and used topically or orally. There are over 200 types of Aloe plants, but the one called Aloe Vera is most common and the leaves have many different uses. 

What benefits does Aloe Barbadensis have?

Aloe Vera has a wide variety of helpful ingredients. It is made up of 99% water, while the remaining one percent contains a powerful combination of  minerals, plant sterols, salcylic acid, amino acids, enzymes, sugar, lignins and more.The plant also contains an impressive number of vitamins, including vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, E, Choline and Folic Acid, which help protect the skin from harmful free radicals which can cause premature ageing.
