Five Skincare Commandments For Your Thirties

What our skin needs changes all the time, but particularly as we age. In your thirties you may have begun to notice the first signs of ageing, this is because our levels of collagen, elastin and glutathione begin to decrease from 25 onwards. Collagen and elastin are proteins which are responsible for keeping the skin firm, smooth and elastic, and glutathione is the body’s most potent antioxidant which helps keeping cells running smoothly. If you haven’t already begun, then your thirties is the perfect time to start taking skincare seriously as it’s no doubt that lifestyle issues like stress and hormonal swings are also taking their effect on the skin. Now is the time to make sure you have the right skincare products and the chance to add additional anti-ageing ones it as well.

Exfoliation Is Key
During your thirties cell turnover and metabolism begin to slow, and the epidermis tends to become thicker and drier. Your skin only naturally exfoliates itself every 35 days, compared to every 14 in your twenties, which means your complexion is more likely to become dull and lacklustre. If you want to maintain a youthful, radiant glow then now’s the time to get serious about exfoliation with our Lift Off Exfoliating Cleanser. It’s formulated with three deep-cleansing, non-irritating acids – tartaric acid, lactic acid and papaya enzyme – which slough off dead skin cells, and it’s even gentle enough for sensitive skin. Using the Exfoliating Cleanser every other night will help prevent a build-up of dead skin cells, refine large pores and keep skin looking smooth.

Look For Vitamin Enhanced Skincare
We all know that vitamins are important for our overall health, but did you know that they are also great for the skin? Vitamin’s C, A and E can all be applied to the skin topically in the form of moisturisers, serums and toners and help prevent the breakdown of collagen by reducing free radicals. Vitamins C and E are important for maintaining healthy skin tone and can help lighten discoloration caused by acne, sun exposure, pregnancy and hormones. Our Celestial Black Diamond Cream is formulated with vitamins C and E, and also Arbutin which helps to brighten the skin and is ideal for targeting pigmentation – another common skincare problem in your thirties.

Never Go Without Sunscreen
This is really something you should have been doing already, but it’s never too late to start. Exposure to sunlight, without the proper protection, is the number one cause of premature ageing and can lead to things like fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, age spots and rough skin texture. Try our Aqua Physics Defence Cream, which contains a mineral UV filter to instantly protect you from harmful UVA/UVB rays.

Avoid Harsh Products
Acne is still fairly common for women in their thirties, but you should no longer be using the harsh products you probably used to treat your spots with in your teens and twenties. The good news is your breakouts are probably happening less often, so it’s important to pick a gentler acne treatment, like our Ground Control Anti Blemish Tonic, that won’t strip moisture from the skin. Our tonic contains Saw Palmetto, which helps to reduce the production of sebum and excess oils.

Introduce An Eye Cream
The eye are is one of the first places to show the signs of ageing, and for many people this can happen between the ages of 28 and 32. The under eye area is more prone to ageing because the skin is delicate and thinner, which also means it’s requires a specialist cream rather than just your standard day or night time moisturiser. Look for an eye cream which contains caffeine, like our Space Defence Bright Eye Lift Gel, which will help banish puffiness and dark circles. It’s also formulated with peptides, a key wrinkle fighting ingredient which helps increase healthy cell communication. The most important thing with eye cream is how you apply. Use your ring finger, as it is has the lightest touch, to apply eye cream to the orbital bone day and night, and make sure you don’t apply it too close to your lashline as the product could travel and irritate your eyes.
