Summer Skincare: The Changes You Need To Make To Your Routine
Summer usually means a big switch up for us all - we are drawn to brighter colours, we wear cooler clothes and we experiment with our make up. But many of us forget to make changes to our skincare routine as well. You may think you have your skincare regime perfected, but you need to make changes to prepare your skin for summer and the warmer weather that, hopefully, lies ahead. If you're not sure where to get started we've put together a list of five easy things you can do to make sure you skin is summer ready.
1. Wear SPF
This is the best thing you can do for your skin, and it will repay you later. You should already be wearing SPF 15 every day, even when it’s cloudy, to protect yourself from harmful UVA and UVB rays. But if a sunscreen isn’t part of yur daily routine yet then now is the perfect time to add one in. The ozone layer is depleting which means more UV rays are getting through and these are harmful to skin. Not only does it increase your risk of skin cancer, but going out without adequate protection puts your skin at risk from premature ageing, wrinkles and pigmentation. Our Aqua Physics Defence Cream contains a mineral UV filter, made of crushed minerals, to instantly protect the skin.
2. Choose lightweight make up
In the summer you may wish to go make up free, but if you feel that you still need some sort of coverage then look after your skin by choosing light weight options. Switch your heavy cream foundation for a tinted moisturiser or BB cream instead. This will allow you skin to breathe and prevent your pores from becoming blocked with sweat, makeup and other impurities which could lead to blemishes and breakouts.
3. Switch up your moisturiser
With the approach of summer comes, usually, warmer weather and this can play havoc with your skin, particularly if it’s oily. You may wish to switch your moisturiser to a lighter one to stop your face feeling like it’s overloaded. Too much rich face cream, combined with make-up and sweat is a recipe for blocked pores. During the summer, with the increase humidity, a lighter face cream is all you need, try our Space Anti Age Day Emulsion which is lightweight but still protects your skin from environmental aggressors.
4. Up your antioxidants
Higher levels of UV rays means more free radicals, and these are considered the worst enemy of good skin. Free radicals are highly charged unstable oxygen molecules which attack human cells and damage DNA, which leads to ageing, fine lines and discolouration. During the summer it’s even more important to look for skincare products which contain antioxidants, like our Lift Off Exfoliating Cleanser, to protect against free radical damage. Including more antioxidant foods like oranges, spinach and dark leafy vegetables will also help.
5. Don't forget to cleanse & exfoliate
In the summer our skin experiences more oil and sweat due to the warmer temperatures and humidity. Both cleansing and exfoliating are important all year round, but especially in the summer to prevent your pores from becoming clogged. If you’ve spent time exercising or running around outdoors cleanse your face afterward, or give it a swipe with a refreshing toner to make sure it stays clean. Regular exfoliation will also give you clearer, more radiant skin, try to remember to do it two to three times a week.
