111ICONS: Elizabeth Saltzman
111SKIN champions and celebrates game changers and innovators in leading industries. Each discussion uncovers the insight and knowledge into their individual approach and within the 111ICONS interview, we share their journey, business and approach to life.
111SKIN: Where did your career begin?
Elizabeth Saltzman: At the tender age of 7 organising my mother’s closets for pocket money in East Hampton, New York. Seriously at 17 in a wonderful store in New York called Parachute. Someone has to do a documentary on that place, as so many talented people came out of there… Whether it be James Jebbia of Supreme to Wilfredo Rosado the amazing jewellery designer to Ruben Toledo, artist.
111SKIN: What was your first big break in fashion?
ES: I was a sales-person at the first Armani boutique in New York City in the 80’s. Mr Armani offered me a job in the design team in Milan. I still pinch myself to have had such extraordinary teachers in my life.
111SKIN: Has anyone inspired you and supported you as you grew to where you are today?
ES: ANYONE??? How about everyone! It all takes a lot of hard work, but none of us do it alone. There is a world of help out there if you’re willing to put in the time.
111SKIN: Favourite look/s you created?
ES: I wish I could be specific about this… Often my favourite looks never hit the carpet, they are done for private events and mean so much. It’s really about building confidence, that’s what I enjoy creating.
11SKIN: Career highlight?
ES: I will let you know when it happens… Working with so many dynamic designers, seamstresses, assistants, editors, publicists, agents, actors, artists, hair stylists, make-up artists, nail technicians, facialists, massage therapists, fitness and mental wellness gurus and so many other leaders is my highlight.
111SKIN: Any advice for someone starting out in the industry?
Don’t give up… Do your homework… Read everything you can… Respect the industry… Treat everyone equally… Think of the environment.
111SKIN: Who would you love to dress in the future?
ES: I don’t know exactly who it is that I want to work with, I know I want to kick ass with whomever it is. I love all the women I work with now. Each one brings so much to the table, it’s a remarkable gang.
111SKIN: Where do you see the industry going?
ES: Thankfully more open to change. More concerned about people’s well-being, the environment and diversity. This is a great time in our industry to make changes that are long overdue.

111SKIN: What is a typical “day in the life” for you?
ES: Up at 6am, talk to the dog, force myself to drink water, scroll/swipe/read for 45 minutes, make a list of todays to dos, work hard with my team for 3 hours, goof off to get my sillies out and procrastinate before the next 3 hours etc, dinner at 8pm, long walk, sleep and repeat.
111SKIN: What is your morning/ evening skincare routine?
ES: Morning: Dry brush (body only), cold shower, toner, moisturiser and sun block… Tiny bit of make-up to super cover my big sunspot and extra rosy-red cheeks… And drink water, water, water!
Evening: I rarely wear make-up, so my evening routine is very simple… Wash face, night serum and deep moisturiser.
111SKIN: How did you discover 111SKIN?
ES: Backstage at a show, all the models were flocking to Eva and her team. They swore by the face masks and the eye masks. Everyone was so excited to have them, I figured they were onto a good thing.
1 111SKIN: Favourite 111SKIN product & why?
ES: I particularly like the masks, whether it be the Sub-Zero De-Puffing Eye Mask, the Rose Gold Illuminating Eye Mask, the Celestial Black Diamond Lifting & Firming Face Mask.
I rarely get to use them, as all my clients steal them off me and so do my two sons. Actually, to be really honest I encourage everyone to steal them, as I think they are that good to use. I also love a luxurious cream… The Celestial Black Diamond Cream is one of the best I have found.
111SKIN: How do you wind down in the evening?
ES: Reading and music always… Potentially a bit of dark chocolate.
111SKIN: Finally, what are your Future goals & aspirations (personal and career focused)?
ES: To get my act together. I have slowly let myself slip for the past 21 years and what a silly mistake that was. I hope it’s not too late to focus on my own wellness while still taking care of all of my AMMMAZING clients.

If you were to advise a London guide, what would be on your list?
Well, As I grew up in Notting Hill, it will always have my heart and if I was recommending spots in London, a wander around Notting Hill would be high up on my list. From there it would be all the best shopping destinations, the iconic private members club, Annabels, Harrods and Liberty’s for any cute and unique gifts. I would always pop into 111CRYO at Harrods for the Cryo Facial and treatment for the ultimate recharge. Sometimes the city is great, but the beautiful secrets of the English countryside is something that should be experienced.
Your In-Flight Essentials?
I don’t have a routine per say and I am certainly not as thorough as Naomi Campbell but I would apply the Meso Infusion Lip Duo and I would always wipe my phone down with anti-bacterial wipes, in fact I do this every day, the bacteria build up is no good for the skin.
In terms of Industry, where do you see the hair industry going?
Well Instagram has changed so much and has impacted the way we consume and learn within the industry, especially with so many creatives, but I still find that a massive amount of people come to the professionals to share the knowledge on how to carry out or complete a desired look, more than ever there is power behind ‘how-to’ videos.
A very valid point and in terms of 2020?
In terms of what we are to see in 2020, things are going to be super creative and we will see a wider awareness for people doing their own thing and it will be expressive and artistic. People will move away from the overtly glamorous looks and will create looks they can tailor to their everyday. As it’s currently Award Season which is the busiest time of the year leading up to the Met Ball, hairstyles are certainly more elaborate, and everyone loves an up do. I would say the most timeless look has to be the blunt bob, it comes around year on year, but it is effortless and timeless.
Outside of hair, what other industries are you into?
I am hugely into Interiors and I would describe my style as 60s/70s glamour, think elaborate and dramatic but I often fantasise about 80s Dallas and Joan Collins and I have to reign myself in. I also love Baking; it is the ultimate way to relax and I find that it is my meditation and therapy. If I’m in the USA I would bake a lot of cookies as everyone is obsessed with then over here and in the UK, I would bake more traditional styles like a lemon tart or an apple tart – it allows for me to be creative outside of my job.
Finally, the best advice you have ever received?
It would have to be from my grandfather, he would often say to me “it’s not how well you’re doing but how well people think you’re doing”. I haven’t successfully implemented it however you can look to Instagram today and people see our work and are blown away by it, but we can be so hard on ourselves and not appreciate our own work ourselves.
